In March, TxDOT officially broke ground on the I-30 Canyon Improvement Project in Dallas — an $888 million reconstruction that will widen I-30 from six to twelve lanes between the I-35E and I-45 interchanges through downtown Dallas. Construction runs through 2031. It’s one of nine major freeway projects now active or launching across DFW in 2026, with a combined value exceeding $830 million.
That’s a lot of road base, crushed concrete, and fill moving across North Texas for the next several years.

Large public infrastructure projects compete directly with private contractors for the same regional aggregate supply. When TxDOT has major jobs running simultaneously across Dallas, Tarrant, and Collin County, pit inventory that was available last quarter gets committed to those contracts. Trucks that were flexible get dedicated to long-term hauls. The material doesn’t disappear — but the competition for it gets real.
The subcontractors working on these TxDOT projects need road base that meets TxDOT Item 247 specification. That requirement pulls from the same pit network that private sitework, utility, and civil contractors source from. In a market where multiple large projects are peaking simultaneously, contractors who wait until they need material to start sourcing it will find the market has already moved.
