Independent dump truck operators are the backbone of short-haul aggregate delivery in Texas. Owner-operators running one or two trucks handle a significant share of the loads that move road base, crushed concrete, and fill dirt from pits to jobsites across DFW and Central Texas. Right now, a meaningful number of them are parking their equipment.
The reason is straightforward. Diesel is at $5.64 a gallon and rising. Fuel surcharges in most hauling agreements recover only 60–70% of actual fuel cost increases. When carriers invoice a load, payment typically comes 30 days or more later. That gap, burning expensive diesel today (waiting a month to get partially reimbursed) is more than many small operators can carry. So trucks are sitting.
