General-purpose sand derived from river sources. Beige to yellow in color with small amounts of clay for compactability. Packs tighter than other sands — ideal for leveling under concrete, pipe embedment, and utility installations.

ASTM C33 Concrete Sand
Redi-Mix Aggregate
Coarse, washed, and screened sand with no large rocks present. Meets gradation requirements for concrete mixing. Also used for pipe embedment and leveling walkways where a coarser particle size is needed.

Cement Stabilized Sand (CSS)
TxDOT Items 400 & 401
Engineered blend of clean well-graded sand and 2–3% Portland cement (Type I, ASTM C150) with controlled moisture. Flows like loose sand during placement but hardens into a low-strength, non-expansive material after curing. Typical 28-day compressive strength: 100–150 psi — strong enough to support pavement or pipe bedding, yet weak enough to be re-excavated with standard equipment.

What's the difference between cushion sand and concrete sand?
Cushion sand is a general-purpose compactable sand for leveling and pipe bedding — it contains small amounts of clay that help it pack tight. Concrete sand is coarser, washed, and screened for consistent gradation — it’s designed for mixing into concrete or asphalt. Using the wrong one affects both compaction and mix performance.
What is cement stabilized sand and when do I need it?
CSS is sand blended with 2–3% Portland cement and water. It flows into place like sand but cures to a low-strength solid — typically 100–150 psi at 28 days. It’s the standard backfill spec on Texas utility trench projects and is referenced in TxDOT Items 400 and 401. If your project spec calls for CSS, call us — we coordinate delivery to active trench locations.
Can I use masonry sand for a paver base?
Yes — masonry sand is a common paver setting bed material. It levels easily and compacts into a firm, stable base. For high-traffic commercial applications, cushion sand may be a better choice for the base layer with masonry sand as the final setting bed.
What type of sand do I need for a concrete mix?
Concrete sand — coarse, washed, and screened. It meets gradation requirements for Redi-Mix concrete aggregate. Not masonry sand, not cushion sand. If your batch plant or ready-mix supplier has a specific gradation spec, call us and we’ll confirm the material matches.
