TxDOT Item 247 Type D

Item 247 Flexible Base — Type A and Type D, Grade 1 or 2

Flexible base is a granular, unbound material placed as a base course in the pavement structure. Txdot TxDOT Item 247 covers the specification for flexible base aggregate used on Texas state highways and DOT-funded projects. Type A is crushed stone from a single natural source. Type D is Type A material or crushed concrete. Grade 1 and Grade 2 available. Gradation reports and documentation available on request.

Road Base & Flex Base FAQ — Common Questions From Texas Contractors

What's the difference between road base and flex base?

In Texas, they’re the same thing. Contractors use both terms for the same product — a compacted crushed aggregate base material meeting TxDOT Item 247. “Flex base” is the TxDOT spec name. “Road base” is the common contractor term. We carry both Type A and Type D to meet either reference.

Which type do I need — Type A or Type D?

If your project is TxDOT-funded or requires documented single-source aggregate, specify Type A limestone. If your project is commercial or private and budget matters, Type D crushed concrete delivers equivalent performance at lower cost. Not sure — call us and we’ll help you read your spec sheet.

Do you carry TxDOT-certified material?

Yes. Both our Type A and Type D flex base meet TxDOT Item 247 specifications. Grade 1 and Grade 2 available. Not everyone sells a testable flex base to TxDOT Item 247 specifications — without proper testing, you could be purchasing stone that is too soft and will break down within a few years. Ask us for gradation reports when you quote.

How deep should flex base be installed?

For roads and heavy-traffic applications, 6–8 inches compacted is standard. For driveways and light commercial, 4–6 inches. For construction entrances and temporary haul roads, 6 inches minimum. Depth depends on subgrade condition and load requirements — call us if you need help estimating.
