What is AREMA #4 ballast?
AREMA #4 is the standard mainline ballast size — a nominal 1¾” to ¾” crushed stone gradation specified by the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association for mainline track construction and rehabilitation. It’s the most common ballast size for Class 1 and regional railroad projects in Texas.
Why is limestone used for rail ballast in Texas?
Over 3 million tons of crushed limestone has been used for railroad ballast in Texas. Limestone is locally sourced, meets AREMA strength and angularity requirements, and provides the drainage performance needed to keep track geometry stable under heavy axle loads.
What does angular ballast do that rounded stone can't?
Because ballast material is angular crushed rock, the crushed ballast locks together as a matrix which transfers large loads from the track structure to the sub-ballast below. Rounded stone doesn’t interlock — it shifts under load and causes track geometry problems that require more frequent maintenance.
