Diesel Jumped 37 Cents in a Week

Dump truck fueling at a Texas diesel island as on-highway diesel prices hit a record in September 2026

Diesel did not drift up this month. It jumped. The national on-highway average rose 36.8 cents in a single week to $5.967 a gallon, a record, and the Gulf Coast moved even harder at up 39.4 cents. For anyone quoting delivered material, a move that size inside one week is not a cost pressure, it is a pricing emergency. Every open quote you are carrying was written against a different fuel number than the one that applies today. Here is what happened, why it is a distillate story rather than an oil story, and what to do about your outstanding quotes this week.

Two weeks ago diesel eased five cents and plenty of people called a top. We wrote at the time that a plateau is not a reversal. This is why that distinction earns its keep.

The national on-highway diesel average reached $5.967 a gallon for the week of September 7, up 36.8 cents from the prior week (Source: U.S. Energy Information Administration, September 2026). It is a record, and it is the largest single-week move of the year.

The Gulf Coast figure matters more to Texas contractors. Gulf Coast diesel rose to $5.754, up 39.4 cents on the week and up $2.35 from a year earlier, the largest year-over-year increase of any region in the country.

Why this is a distillate story, not an oil story

In the same week, regular gasoline rose only 8.6 cents. If this were crude driving everything, both fuels would move together. They did not.

The mechanics are on the distillate side. Inventories are running roughly 13 percent below the five-year average for this point in the year. Refineries are already operating near 98 percent of capacity, which means there is no spare capacity to bring on. And refining margins on diesel have reached record levels. When stocks are thin and refiners are already flat out, price is the adjustment mechanism that is left.

What it does to a delivered ton

Fuel is embedded in a delivered ton twice: once in the haul itself, and again in what the pit charges to run loaders and crushers. On a long haul, freight can exceed the material cost, and a 37-cent week moves that number materially between the day you quote and the day you deliver. It helps to know how many tons are actually on the truck when you run that math.

What to do this week

Three things, in order.

Put a short expiration on every delivered quote you have outstanding. Open-ended pricing in a week like this is a donation.

Check how often your fuel surcharge resets. A surcharge that recalculates monthly leaves you carrying a month of exposure at a pace like this one. Weekly is the defensible cadence right now. Here is how fuel surcharges are actually calculated.

Re-run haul distance on marginal jobs. When fuel climbs this fast, the nearest qualified pit wins on more jobs than it did a month ago, even at a higher price per ton at the scale. Get a delivered number from the closer source before you assume your usual pit is still right.

The forward read

We are not going to predict where diesel goes next, and anyone who tells you they know is guessing. What we can say is structural: with inventories thin and refining capacity already maxed, the market has very little cushion against any further disruption. Price your work for a market without a cushion.

Fuel is not a line item on a delivered ton right now. It is the line item.
