Grade 1 Flex Base (1½" Down)
Type D recycled concrete flex base for structural road base, municipal work, county work, DOT-related projects, and engineered sitework when the source and gradation meet the project specification.
Grade 1 flex base is commonly ordered as a coarser recycled concrete base with a nominal 1½-inch top size. For TxDOT, county, municipal, or engineered work, the controlling requirement is the project specification, including material type, grade, source, gradation, and current test documentation. TxDOT Item 247 allows Type D material to include crushed concrete, but the accepted material must meet the plans and applicable testing requirements.
Like all Type D material, Grade 1 flex base is either Type A stone or crushed concrete. In our case, recycled concrete diverted from demolition and removed pavement, crushed and screened to spec rather than quarried fresh. The angular, fractured particle shape created during crushing helps the material interlock under compaction. When the project spec allows recycled concrete and the material is properly placed and compacted, crushed concrete flex base can be a cost-effective alternative to virgin limestone for many structural base applications. On a high-volume base job across DFW, Austin, or Waco, that difference shows up fast on the material line of a bid.
Grade 1’s coarser gradation gives it strong load-bearing characteristics under moderate to high traffic, particularly where the base has little lateral confinement, a common condition on rural roads, unpaved shoulders, and construction entrances without curb structure. It’s also the grade most often specified where a gradation report or test documentation will be requested before the material goes down.
Depth matters as much as material selection. Roads, haul roads, construction entrances, and heavy-traffic areas often require thicker compacted sections, but final depth should follow the project plans, engineer’s recommendation, subgrade condition, and expected traffic load. And every ton ordered is a ton of demolition concrete that didn’t go to a landfill. Worth mentioning to developers or GCs tracking sustainability commitments on a project.

Ordering Note: Grade 1 and Grade 2 fall under the same TxDOT Item 247 gradation table, and either may be acceptable depending on your engineer’s spec — this is the one to default to for private commercial work unless your plans specifically call for the coarser Grade 1 or a documented Type A source. Confirm against your project spec.

3/8" Fines
Fine crusher fines for compaction, finish-grading, and walkable surfaces.
3/8-inch crushed concrete fines (sometimes called crusher fines or 3/8 minus) are the finest gradation Aggregates Now offers in recycled concrete. Unlike the clean, low-fines material used for drainage (our 1-inch and 1½-inch products), fines retain the fine particles and dust generated during crushing, which is exactly what makes them useful: those fine particles bind together under compaction into a firm, tight, walkable surface with very little void space.
Fines are the material to reach for when the goal is a smooth, precisely graded finish rather than drainage or structural load-bearing capacity. Common applications include topping and finish-grading over a compacted flex base layer, filling voids between larger stabilization rock on soft or uneven ground, tight utility work where grading accuracy matters more than water movement, and walking surfaces or pathways where 3-inch or even 1-inch material would be too coarse underfoot.
Because fines compact so tightly, they’re not the right choice where drainage is the priority. A compacted fines layer sheds water on the surface rather than letting it pass through, the opposite behavior from our 1-inch or 1½-inch drainage-grade crushed concrete. If the jobsite need is “clean rock that lets water through,” size up to 1-inch. If the need is “tight, compactable, walkable surface,” fines are the right call.
Fines are produced the same way as our other crushed concrete sizes (recycled demolition concrete run through a crusher and screened down to size) rather than mined or manufactured from raw stone. Contractors sometimes compare crushed concrete fines to decomposed granite for pathway and light-use applications. Crushed concrete fines are often the more cost-effective option and can compact into a tight surface, though they will not provide the tan or rust color that many buyers choose DG for. As with other recycled concrete materials, fines are often quoted as a cost-effective alternative to comparable virgin screenings or manufactured sand, depending on source and delivery distance.

1" Crushed Concrete
Clean recycled rock for drainage, sub-base, and jobsite access.
1-inch crushed concrete is a clean recycled aggregate screened to a 1-inch nominal size with fines reduced, so water can move through it more easily than compactable flex base or fines. That’s the core difference between 1-inch material and our flex base or fines products: where flex base is built to compact tight for structural support, 1-inch crushed concrete is built to let water pass while still holding its shape under load.
That drainage characteristic makes 1-inch crushed concrete a practical choice where a jobsite needs stone rather than compactable fill: drainage layers, sub-base applications where plans allow recycled aggregate, pipe bedding or embedment only where local specs and inspectors approve it, utility trench backfill, and general jobsite access where standing water is the problem flex base will not solve on its own. It also holds up well under repeated truck and equipment traffic, which is why it shows up on active construction entrances and temporary access roads, particularly on sites that see rain during the build and need a surface that won’t turn to mud.
Compared to 1½-inch crushed concrete, 1-inch is the better choice when the application calls for a finer, more workable stone, easier to rake and grade by hand, easier to compact into tight spaces like trench backfill, while still delivering the drainage benefit that makes clean crushed concrete useful. If the site needs more void space and a coarser stone for heavier drainage or wetter conditions, 1½-inch is the next step up.
Across active DFW, Austin, and San Antonio jobsites, 1-inch is typically ordered alongside a coarser base material rather than on its own — flex base for the structural layer, 1-inch wherever the plan calls for a drainage layer instead of more structural base.

Ordering Note: Confirm with your engineer or inspector before specifying 1-inch crushed concrete for pipe bedding — some utility specs require virgin aggregate or a specific gradation. For general drainage, access, and sub-base work, 1-inch crushed concrete is a straightforward, cost-effective call.

1½" Crushed Concrete
Larger clean rock for heavier drainage and wet jobsite conditions.
1½-inch crushed concrete steps up from our 1-inch product in both size and void space — a clean, low-fines recycled aggregate for jobs where 1-inch material doesn’t provide enough drainage capacity or structural bulk. The larger particle size creates more open space between rocks once placed, which means more water movement and a coarser, more stable working surface for equipment and foot traffic on soft ground.
This is the size most contractors reach for when a site is already wet, or is likely to get wet before the work is done. Heavy drainage applications, temporary access roads across low-lying or poorly draining ground, mud control on active construction entrances, and general stabilization on wet or soft subgrade are all common calls for 1½-inch material. It’s also a practical middle ground on moderate slopes and drainage channels where 1-inch would wash out but full 3-inch oversized rock is more than the application needs.
Because it’s recycled concrete rather than quarried stone, 1½-inch crushed concrete carries the same cost advantage as the rest of our lineup — meaningful on projects where wet-weather stabilization wasn’t in the original budget. Contractors sometimes ask whether to jump straight to 3-inch for wet or soft conditions. The general rule: if equipment is getting stuck or the surface won’t hold a grade at all, size up to 3-inch. If the ground is soft but still workable and drainage is the main issue, 1½-inch is usually the better balance of cost and performance.
On active DFW and Austin sites, this is often the material crews keep on standing order through a wet stretch of the schedule — a load or two staged near known problem areas so a soft entrance or a rutted staging pad gets corrected the same day instead of waiting on a special order.

3" Crushed Concrete
Oversized recycled concrete for heavy stabilization and rough site access.
3-inch crushed concrete is an oversized recycled aggregate for site conditions where 1½-inch material won’t hold up — soft ground, muddy access points, and low spots that need a durable working surface rather than additional drainage. The larger particle size creates a coarse, interlocking surface that resists rutting under repeated truck and equipment traffic, which is why it’s the size contractors reach for when a site is actively failing under load rather than just wet.
Typical applications include heavy haul roads across soft or saturated subgrade, construction entrances and laydown yards on sites with chronic mud problems, soft subgrade stabilization ahead of paving or further site work, and large fill areas where oversized material is needed to bridge unstable ground. It’s a common call on active civil and utility sites during wet-weather stretches, when smaller aggregate gets pushed into the mud rather than staying on top of it. Because it’s recycled concrete, 3-inch material carries the same cost advantage over virgin limestone rock as the rest of our crushed concrete lineup.
One important distinction: 3-inch crushed concrete is not the same product as 3×5 crushed concrete, and the two aren’t interchangeable. 3-inch is sized for stabilization and access — a working surface contractors and equipment drive on directly. 3×5 is a larger-format material sized for erosion control and channel protection, where the rock needs to resist moving water rather than support traffic. If your application involves flowing water — a creek crossing, a drainage outfall, a washout area — size up to 3×5 rather than ordering additional 3-inch material.
Contractors managing an active civil or utility site often keep 3-inch on standing order through the wettest stretch of a project, rather than waiting until equipment is already stuck to place a call.

3x5 Crushed Concrete
Large recycled concrete for erosion control, drainage, and creek crossings.
3×5 crushed concrete is Aggregates Now’s largest recycled concrete size — oversized rock in the 3-to-5-inch range, sized specifically for applications where water is moving across or through the site and smaller rock would shift, float, or wash out. It’s the size that belongs at the top of the lineup when the job is protecting a surface from erosion rather than supporting equipment traffic.
Common applications include creek and drainage crossings where temporary or semi-permanent stream access needs to hold up against current, drainage outfalls and pipe discharge points where concentrated flow would otherwise erode the surrounding ground, slope protection on cut-and-fill areas prone to washout, and industrial or utility site stabilization where standing or moving water is a persistent site condition. Its size and mass let it stay in place under flow conditions that would move 3-inch or smaller material within a single rain event.
3×5 crushed concrete should not be confused with 3-inch crushed concrete or with natural limestone rip rap and gabion stone. 3-inch material is sized for stabilizing ground under traffic, not for resisting water flow (using it in a creek crossing or drainage outfall risks washout). Limestone rip rap and gabion stone are virgin quarried products with their own gradations, documentation requirements, and engineered use cases. 3×5 crushed concrete can serve as a recycled alternative for some erosion-control and drainage applications, but it should only be substituted for rip rap when the project spec, permit, or engineer allows it.
Because the individual rocks are large and heavy, 3×5 loads are typically placed directly at the point of use rather than spread and graded like smaller aggregate. Worth planning truck access to the actual crossing, outfall, or slope in advance rather than a general laydown area.

Crushed Concrete FAQ — Common Questions From Texas Contractors
Is crushed concrete as strong as limestone?
For many base applications, yes, when the crushed concrete meets the project spec and is properly placed and compacted. Recycled crushed concrete flex base can meet TxDOT Item 247 Type D requirements when sourced, tested, and documented correctly. For engineered, DOT, county, or municipal work, always confirm the required material type, grade, source, and gradation before ordering.
Why use crushed concrete over limestone?
Crushed concrete is often chosen because it can reduce material cost, reuse recycled concrete, and perform well in many base, access, and stabilization applications. Delivered cost depends on source location, haul distance, load count, truck availability, jobsite access, and requested delivery time. For high-volume base work, the savings can be meaningful when the project allows recycled material.
Do you carry TxDOT-spec flex base?
Aggregates Now can source Type D recycled concrete flex base for projects that require TxDOT Item 247 material. For DOT-funded, county, municipal, or engineered work, confirm the required item, type, grade, source, and documentation before ordering. Gradation reports or current test documentation may be available depending on the supplying source.
What size do I need for road base?
For compactable road base, parking lots, driveways, and pads, start with recycled concrete flex base. For drainage layers, wet access areas, or utility work where approved, 1″ or 1½” clean crushed concrete may be a better fit. For rough stabilization, use 3″. For erosion control or drainage outfalls, consider 3×5. If your project has plans or a spec book, order to the spec first.
What's the minimum order for Crushed Concrete delivery?
Crushed concrete delivery is usually quoted by the truckload, and minimums depend on material availability, source location, haul distance, truck type, delivery timing, and jobsite access. Send the delivery address, material size, estimated tonnage or load count, and requested delivery window, and we will confirm the most practical delivery option.
