What is Class F fly ash and how is it different from Class C?

Class F fly ash originates from anthracite and bituminous coals and consists mainly of alumina and silica with lower calcium content than Class C. Penn State Engineering Class C fly ash comes from sub-bituminous coals and has higher calcium content — it’s self-cementing. Class F requires Portland cement to activate its pozzolanic properties. For sulfate resistance and ASR mitigation, Class F is the preferred specification.

How much fly ash can replace Portland cement?

Your mix design engineer sets the replacement rate based on strength requirements, curing conditions, and project specifications.
